There are very few record left by the Celts who were not in the habit of using written records so much has been lost about their beliefs. The meaning of celtic knot designs has been lost over time or been changed by christian influences. Many designs were adapted by the early christians as decorations in their churches and took on the meanings associated with the christian religion. Many meanings attributed to celtic knots have been made up in modern times, perhaps as a means to sell celtic knot jewelry!
The shapes of the designs may have determined the meanings. For instance animal shapes represent attributes of the animals represented, circles represent unity, eternity or rebirth. Squares or four-fold shapes are symbols of protection. The interconnectiveness and looping of the knotwork may represent eternity and they may have been made at one time to ward off evil spirits.
